Mitsubishi is sort of like the side project of the auto industry, and really, of its own conglomerate. While the Mitsubishi name is shared with over 40 companies under the same logo, the motor division fights to maintain profitability in an increasingly volatile auto market. The Lancer continues to be one of the hot models among tuners, but Civics and virtually any Mazda drive percentages earthward with lighter models and lower price points.
Mitsubishi is one of the youngest carmakers in the industry, just approaching the 40-year marker. After its 1970 inception, Mitsu quickly formed several alliances with major produces in the industry to bolster distribution. It worked, and the company saw huge growth through the 70’s and 80’s. Unfortunately, when anyone else takes a hit, Mitsubishi takes the biggest kidney shot, making profitability a challenge and maybe even a pipe dream.

Sites worth visiting
The official Mitsubishi Motors page is one of the best official sites out there. They slide the retail garbage to the background and instead give us a look at the company. Their web museum showcases every facet of brand development, from 1970 to the present. They’ve also got features on environment and company philosophy. Much as we love the site, it’s hard not to wonder if they’d be better off just trying to sell more cars.
Mitsubishi on Wikipedia
The Wikipedia entry for Mitsubishi does more to deal with the various Mitsu alliances and partnerships than Mitsubishi’s own site. You’ll also find a short history and an interesting snippet on revitalizing the brand. It seems like everyone other than Toyota and Honda are looking to ‘revitalize’ these days.
One place Mitsubishi continues to maintain some heat is the rally world. This site is the official page for Mitsubishi rally efforts, complete with event calendars and news updates. Check out their history link for a look at the brand’s rally endeavors from the very beginning.
