Auto repairs can be very expensive. Even a small fix can cost a lot more than you anticipate. More than once I've walked into a Pep Boys expecting to purchase a small part and have been amazed at the cost. If you're on a budget or would like to save money on your auto parts, consider skipping Pep Boys or other auto repair stores and instead, head straight to your local junkyard. By purchasing used auto parts at your local junkyard, you will not only save up to 95% on the cost of the part, but you are also helping to recycle, thereby causing less harm to the environment.

If you're considering purchasing used auto parts at a junkyard, here are some tips to keep in mind.

  1. Call several junkyard in advance for the used auto part you need and ask if they might have the part and the cost of it – and contact your closest junkyard to see if they will meet or even beat the price.
  2. Wear clothing that can get dirty. This almost goes without saying, however, a junk yard can be a dirty place, fully of dirt, oil and rust. You will almost inevitably come out of it covered with grime.
  3. Bring your own tools. When you locate the used auto part, you'll have to remove it yourself.
  4. If you don't know much about cars, bring along someone who does.
  5. Once you locate your part, verify that you can return the part for a replacement if it doesn't work properly.
  6. Bring cash. Most junkyards will not take anything but cash so your credit card or check won't be good. It would be frustrating for you to spend time locating and removing the part, only to discover that you need to make a trip to the bank or cash machine.

By following these simple steps, you'll be able to save a lot of money on the cost of a used auto part as well as help the environment by recycling those parts. All in all, heading to your local junkyard instead of your local Pep Boys is an excellent idea.
