In the middle of winter in Northeast Ohio, seeing a 2011 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X in your snowy driveway is a reason for excitement. The design of the Xterra is all SUV and it has as much attitude as any SUV on the road. Believe me when I tell you the snow filled streets of Ohio were no match for this 4x4.

Exterior

The exterior of the 2011 Nissan Xterra Pro-4x gives off a rugged look that can't be ignored. Bullz-Eye had the chance to review the all new PRO-4X off-road model which comes with a standard 4-wheel drive and, at least on our model, a five-speed automatic transmission. The lava red paint job fit this SUV well, adding a colorful spirit that matched the overall exterior design. The PRO-4X had fog lights, roof mounted off road lights, black/sandblast aluminum front fascia, roof rack rails and crossbars with an air dam. Also included on our model were rear side bumper steps, skid plates, front tow hook and so much more. As you can see from the feature list, this car is for the people who truly like to challenge themselves and their vehicles. The look of the Xterra hasn't changed much in recent years, but why ruin a great design?

Interior

The interior of the 2011 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X  stays true to its SUV bloodline and doesn't make any apologies for its rugged feel. The 5-passenger Xterra sported off-road specific seat fabric, 60/40 split fold flat 2nd row seats with removable seat bottom cushions, fold flat front passenger seats, and blue tooth hands free phone system. Even with the modern day technology in the Xterra, it still felt like an old school SUV in so many good ways. The interior is sporty and fun with a toughness that you just don't find these days in the auto industry. From the easy clean cargo area with utili-track cargo channel system to the cabin interior, the 2011 Nissan Xterra never forgets those who will truly go off road. I was also impressed with the leather seating in the Pro-4X package as it had a durable and quality feel.

Performance

As sharp as the 2011 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X the performance of this SUV just might be the top selling point. This isn't a car-based crossover so don't look for a luxury car ride. My bride and I both agreed that the Xterra was one of the funnest cars we had driven in a while. The truck feel of the Xterra was classic but also refined. The good qualities are alive and well but the overly stiff and bumpy ride is diminished. The 4.0-liter DOHC V6 engine provided plenty of power and, coupled with 16-inch machined alloy off-road wheels and 4-wheel drive, we stormed through the snow filled roads in Ohio. Overall, we were impressed with the power and handling from the Xterra. The continuous variable valve timing control system (CVTCS) made for smooth driving and the rear leaf spring suspension handled whatever old man winter had to offer. Gas mileage is also respectable at 15mpg city and 20mpg highway. The front independent double wishbone suspension with coil springs, a fully boxed high strength frame with front and rear stabilizer bars and electronic locking rear differential give the Xterra a unique combination of toughness and technology.

Overview

When so many out there are shunning SUVs, the 2011 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X takes the best of what 4-wheel drive SUVs have to offer and keep something very American alive and thriving! The Xterra is a  vehicle that embraces its off-road capabilities and keeps the hard core design of a truck. This isn't the vehicle for everyone, but if you love the outdoors and want an SUV that can handle the toughest terrain, the 2011 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X just might be your match. For those who want a really fun ride that's safe  in the worst conditions, consider taking the Xterra for a spin.
