Songs titled sleep, Songs about getting sleeping

Sleep is underrated. Take it from me, a new parent. Besides those that are young and/or party around the clock, new parents suffer from lack of sleep more than anyone. But talking about it and writing about it is therapeutic. Hence, this list, which is a mix disc list of songs about, you guessed it, sweet sleep. Those of you reading this at work, doze at your own risk….

I’m Not Sleeping,” Counting Crows (Recovering the Satellites)
As great as the Crows’ debut album was, the follow-up, Recovering the Satellites, was a tad more melodic with more intricate arrangements. And those songs. Just, wow.

Something to Sleep To,” Michelle Branch (The Spirit Room)
One of Branch’s more rock-oriented (read: far less annoying than much of her bubblegum stuff), this alt-rocker resembles Dishwalla’s “Give,” with beautifully lush harmonies.

As You Sleep,” Something Corporate (North)
Piano-fronted rock bands were in vogue a few years ago, and when they were, this band was right up there with the best.

Do You Sleep?” Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories (Tails)
She is the perfect combination of girl-next-door cute and singer/songwriter-hot. But I can’t describe it better than this video can:

Sleep Tight,” Joe Rohan (Rewind)
Cleveland, Ohio’s best-kept secret—Joe Rohan has a middle of America sound and storytelling ability akin to John Hiatt or even John Mayer.

Sleepsinging,” the Damnwells (Bastards of the Beat)
The Damnwells are not just one of the best rock bands in New York City, they’re one of the best rock bands of the last ten years, bar none. Go hear them NOW.

Sleeping With the Lights On,” Teitur (Poetry & Aeroplanes)
His full name is Teitur Lassen and he hails from the Faroe Islands. But all you need to know is that Teitur sounds like a new Paul Simon.

Sleep Baby Jane,” Over the Rhine (Eve)
This acoustic-based Cincinnati band has been touring the under the radar circuit for the better part of two decades. But if this is the first you’ve heard of them, let this be the first song you check out.

Sweet Sweet Sleep,” Ian Ball (Who Goes There)
One of the lead singers and songwriters of UK sensation Gomez moves to Los Angeles, has a few beers, and records an album with a studio-rat friend. Not too shabby of a life.

Sleeping Lessons,” the Shins (Wincing the Night Away)
A great album from 2007—these guys cross over from indie cool to mainstream listenability with relative ease, and manage to keep that “cool” intact.

Sleep On It,” Saving Jane (Girl Next Door)
Lead singer Marti Dodson is hot, but this band is much more than that. They have hooks and mass appeal the same way Scandal did 25 years ago.

Singing in My Sleep,” Semisonic (Feeling Strangely Fine)
Contrary to popular belief, this album did not begin and end with “Closing Time.” In fact, there are five or six more great songs on the set, including this pop romp led by a cheesy but cool piano riff.

Trouble Sleeping,” Corinne Bailey Rae (Corinne Bailey Rae)
This relative newcomer is like a combination of Lily Allen, Alicia Keys and Sade. Nothing wrong with that.

Talking in Your Sleep,” the Romantics (In Heat)
The Romantics’ biggest hit was not the frat party and wedding band staple, “What I Like About You.” Instead, it’s “Talking in Your Sleep,” which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Trouble Sleeping,” the Perishers (Let There Be Morning)
You’re automatically cool if you landed a song on any of the O.C. soundtracks. But this brooding emo track was already proof that the Perishers were cool.
