Bad technique? Maybe. Poor throwing mechanics? Some say. A big work in progress? Probably. Tennessee Titans’ third overall selection in the first round? Yes sir, and that’s all that mattered to Vince Young.

Lets recap: Young gets placed on the back burner most of his collegiate career to Matt Leinart. Then he beats Leinart on the biggest national stage in college football, only to be ripped publicly for his Wonderlic score and receive criticism that he’s the least NFL-ready quarterback out of the top three prospects (Leinart and Vanderbilt’s Jay Cutler being the others).

After all the mock drafts, projections and prospect grades, however, Young was drafted six spots ahead of Leinart and better yet, arguably had a bigger impact than his fellow rookie quarterback.

After being groomed in the first three games of the ’06 season, the rookie Young was eventually named starter by Titans’ head coach Jeff Fisher in Week 4. In his pro debut, Young completed 14 of 29 passes for 155 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He hardly put on a passing clinic and worse yet, he only rushed for three yards after being haled as possibly the next Michael Vick.

After another loss to the Colts in Week 5, however, Young and the Titans won their next two games. He earned his first NFL victory in a 25-22 win over the Redskins in which he threw for 161 yards and a touchdown. Tennessee won the very next game against the Texans, but dropped the following to contests to fall to 2-7 on the season.

What happened next, however, is what has many in Tennessee clamoring for tickets in ’07. Young took the Titans on a wild ride, winning six straight and almost leading the team to the postseason if not for an ultra competitive AFC. In those six games, Young led Tennessee to thrilling victories over the Giants, Colts and Texans. For his tremendous effort, Young was named NFL Rookie of the Year.

Even though he finished at the bottom of the quarterback stat categories, nobody can deny the impact Young had in his rookie campaign. He brought excitement back to Tennessee and healed fans’ wounds after losing franchise cornerstone Steve Young in the offseason. While their offseason has been rather quiet as far as making moves to bolster the roster, the Titans should have plenty to look forward to in ’07 with Young under center.

Young threw for 2,546 yards and nine touchdowns in 2007, as well as rushed for 395 yards and three scores. He continues to struggle as a passer in the NFL, but once again the Titans came close to making the postseason in his second year. The third year is often very important for young quarterbacks, so it'll be interesting to see how Young progresses in 2008.
