Just imagine; at one time, the fine originators of the US Open only wanted their tournament to be an exclusive entertainment event.
Now the US Open houses a $17-million prize championship for over 600 male and female professionals and is gaining popularity at a rapid pace.
The US Open is the final of four events in the Grand Slam tennis tournament that is held annually for two weeks during the months of August and September.
Who needs only one championship? The US Open has five, including men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles as well as additional tournaments for wheelchair and junior players.
How about some history? Given that its birth was in the United States, it is only appropriate that most of the record holders are American.
Richard Sears (USA), Bill Larned (USA) and Bill Tilden (USA) all hold the record for most singles championships in US Open history, with Sears winning all of his titles in consecutive years. Jimmy Connors (USA) and Pete Sampras (USA) each hold five singles titles apiece.
Want more proof that this tournament is often dominated by the US? Check the ladies side of things with Molla Bjurstedt Mallory (USA) winning eight singles titles and Chris Evert (USA) claiming six. Of their titles, Mallory, Evert and Helen Jacobs (USA) all won four consecutive titles in a row.
Fast-forward to present day and the tournament houses some of the biggest names in professional sports, not just in the tennis world. The list isn’t dominated solely by Americans either, like the sport once used to be.
Roger Federer (Swiss), Kim Clijsters (BEL), Rafael Nadal (SPN), Andy Roddick (USA), Lindsay Davenport (USA) and Andre Agassi (USA) are just some of the great players that will allow the US Open to gain even more of an audience.
With more fans attending the US Open to watch young players like Nadal and Federer (neither player is older than 25), as well as TV ratings charting new heights, the tournament has plenty of excitement to build upon heading into the future and beyond.
